This video offers a (relatively) quick introduction to transcribing documents in TEI-XML by using oXygen, showcasing some of the advantages a dedicated XML editor with out-of-the-box TEI integration like oXygen can have over some other (free, open source) alternatives.
The video assumes that is viewers will have a general idea of what markup is, what XML is, and what the TEI is. If you do not, you can watch another video lecture I made as a refresher course called 'Markup, XML, and the TEI'.Transcribing a document like a printed or draft version of a literary work like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (as shown in this video) is basically a first step towards making a Digital Scholarly Edition of that work. If you do not know what a Digital Scholarly Edition is, you might also be interested in my video lecture: 'What is a Digital Scholarly Edition?' That lecture also briefly introduces the Beckett Digital Manuscript Project, which is referred to a few times in this video.
This video was originally developed as part of a workshop on 'Text Encoding with the TEI', as part of the course 'Digitala Metoder: Textanalys och Visualisering', which it taught to MA students in Library and Information Science at the University of Borås. The workshop was taught in person, on 8 February 2023, and this video version was recorded afterwards for students who had been unable to join us in Borås. It will also serve as a video that may accompany similar classes or workshops in the future. The video was recorded by Wout Dillen, who currently works as a Senior Lecturer as part of the Swedish School for Library and Information Science, at the University of Borås.
