In this third class in the
Technologies for Digital Libraries 1 course, we take a step back from our focus on HTML, and zoom in on XML instead -- a meta-language that provides the syntactical rules that allow us to write our own markup languages. After a quick historical look at how HTML, XML, and XHTML relate to one another, we will learn how to distinguish a markup language's syntax from its vocabulary, and how the combination of those enable us to write well-formed, consistent, and valid (XML) markup. Throughout the class, we will learn to better understand XML's underlying datamodel (which dictates the syntax), and how we may refer to different namespaces and XML-schemas (to declare which vocabulary we are using). This prepares the students for the two exercises that accompany this lecture: one that teaches students how to write well-formed and valid XML, and one where they learn to write an XSD schema to formalise their own XML vocabulary.
