This video offers students a first introduction to git and GitHub, teaching them how to keep track of changes during web or software development, commit them to a new version of their project, push their committed changes to a remote repository on GitHub. It also teaches them to fork someone else's repository on GitHub, improve on their work, and put in a pull request to make the original owner of the repository aware of their work, and suggest some changes.
You can find the slides to this video lecture through this link. This specific slideshow was developed as training materials to accompany the spring 2022 edition of the ‘Digital Cultural Heritage Materials’ course in the University of Borås’ International MA programme on ‘Digital Library and Information Services’ at the Swedish School for Library and Information Science. Wout currently works as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Borås.
The video lecture makes use of Wout's 'Pizza Party' repository, which was specifically developed to teach students the basics of git and GitHub. It also includes an exercise where students are encouraged to put their newly gained knowledge to the test. The instructions to this exercise can be found on the repository's wiki page.
For those watching the video lecture who are unaware of what 'markdown' is, the lecture also mentions a previous video lecture Wout made that gives the briefest of introductions to the file format.
